Q: What is body sugaring?

A:  Body Sugaring is an ancient art of hair removal using a completely natural paste made from water, sugar and lemon juice. It looks like caramel or molasses. The paste is molded onto your skin against the direction of the hair growth, then quickly flicked off - removing the sugar paste and your unwanted hair.  This ancient hand technique allows for the hair to be extracted in the direction of its growth means less breakage and discomfort for you! It's more sanitary and reduces waste because there are no sticks or strips. After your service the paste and gloves are discarded and you are left with beautifully smooth skin.

Q: How should I prepare for my sugaring appointment?

  • Avoid shaving for at least 7-10 days.

  • Avoid tanning for 24 hours before (definitely no sugaring on sunburns).

  • Shower or rinse off before your appointment, especially if you've just worked out.

  • Do not apply any moisturizers to the area being sugared on the day of your appointment.

  • Do not exfoliate the area 24 hours before or after your appointment.

Q: Does sugaring hurt?

A: Everyone has different hair density and pain threshold, so everyone’s experience of sugaring is different, too. Since sugaring removes hair at the root of the follicle, it’s likely to sting a bit. The good news is, the more consistently you sugar, the less likely it is to hurt. With repeat sugaring, less hair grows back in between services. Hair follicles also weaken, so that whatever hair does grow back can be removed more easily.

Q: I have sensitive skin; can I still get sugared?

A: Yes! Any skin pigment or skin type can be Sugared. It is even 100% safe during your entire pregnancy! With Sugaring, only the dead skin and hair is removed – NONE of your live skin will be removed. The sugar paste is applied at room temperature, so it can NEVER burn you! Made from sugar, water, and lemon juice, our sugar paste is edible, eco-friendly, biodegradable, and dissolves with warm water.

Q: Can I get sugared during my period?

A: Yes! Generally, skin is more sensitive during this time and you may opt to reschedule (Cancellation policy is still enforced), but it is fine to get sugared during your period. All we ask that you wear a tampon, or menstrual cup.

Q: Can I have sex after being sugared?

A: No, we recommend waiting at least 24 hours after bikini and Brazilian treatments. When follicles are dilated, sweat and bacteria may irritate freshly sugared spots, which can be quite a bummer.

Q: How long does sugaring last?

A: To answer this, you should first know there are 3 stages of hair growth. Growing, Resting, and Shedding. When hair is sugared in the growing stage (typically when its length is 1/8” to ¼” long), it won’t begin to grow back for 3-6 weeks. However, not all of your hairs are in the same stage at any time. We recommend that clients get sugared every 3 weeks for the first 6 months in order to catch every new growth cycle. This leads to long term hair reduction.

Q: Can I shave between appointments? Why or why not?

A: It is not recommended if you're trying to achieve long term hair reduction. Remember those 3 growth cycles? Some of your hairs will be in the resting phase, and will not be able to be extracted by sugaring if you choose to shave them. You will have to wait until those hairs reach the shedding phase and naturally fall out.

Q: Does sugaring cause ingrown hairs?

A: No, sugaring is gently exfoliating and helps to extract ingrown hairs. It removes the hairs from the root in the direction of growth, helping to prevent ingrown hairs from forming.

Now, let's examine what does cause ingrown hairs:

  • During waxing, hair is removed in the opposite direction of growth, causing both disruption in the follicle and broken hairs. This can cause ingrown hairs to form almost immediately.

  • Naturally, when new hairs are growing in, if the surface of the skin isn't regularly exfoliated and moisturized, the hair can get trapped under a layer of dry, dead skin cells.

Q: Can I get sugared if I'm taking Isotretinoin (Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis)?

A: No, since these medications can cause severe drying and thinning of all epidermal tissues, it is advised to wait at least six months to one year after discontinuation to receive any sugaring treatments.

Q: Can I get sugared while using Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac, or Differin?

A: No, since these medications can cause severe drying and thinning of all epidermal tissues, it is advised to wait at least six months to one year after discontinuation to receive any sugaring treatments.

Q: Is there a minimum age requirement to get sugared at Sugar Mama?

A: If you're under 18, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for your first appointment. Once you and your guardian have signed our waiver and consent forms, you are free to come in unattended as you wish. Absolutely no bikini services under the age of 16.
